New University Sports Centre officially opened

On 9 April, the new University Sports Centre was officially opened. During a festive opening event, sport and history came together in a varied programme featuring interactive sports moments and live performances.

Hosted by Iefke van Belkum, the programme included conversations about the connecting power of sport. Visitors were also invited to take part in an interactive basketball session with Olympic champion Arvin Slagter.

A special moment during the opening was the unveiling of a section of the old sports floor from the previous sports centre. This floor symbolises generations of athletes and forms a tangible link between the past and the future of student sport.

Through dance, aerial acrobatics and a cheer demonstration, the versatility of sport and movement within the USC was clearly showcased. Visitors could also walk along a display featuring a timeline of Leiden’s student sports history.

The new USC is more than a sports facility: it is a place where students and staff meet, stay active and work together towards wellbeing and connection.
